Jacs Harris (b.1977)

An abstract painter making work inspired during walking, cycling and studying the landscape around her home and studio in the Fenlands of South Lincolnshire. Her focus shifts between the micro and the macro, noticing tiny details within the expansive Fen landscapes.

Working with collage, acrylics and oil + cold wax her process involves building layers, then scratching and scraping into the surface. Through this excavation method she is searching to give a sense of the hidden, obscured or the disappeared. Hinting at traces of past occupation of the land by revealing previous marks, lines, shapes and colours within the surface of the painting.

Shapes, textures and closely observed colours reference the landscape. Painting titles come from local place names and collected Lincolnshire dialect.

Areas of interest directly influencing her work include aerial archeology, maps and historical research. Subjects include fields, birds, glass houses, shadows, rubbish and the demolition of houses. Through the research and painting process she explores themes of historical, geographical and personal change, sense of place, settlement and belonging.

“Inhabitiveness: A love of continuity, of endurance, of sameness, of permanency, of occupation”. (Tiffany Watt Smith, The Book of Human Emotions).
